Why Does Skin Change So Dramatically After Menopause?

Sand clock

Good skincare, proper sun protection, and a healthy lifestyle can slow the aging process and keep skin looking its best. But after menopause, skin seems to age overnight. Within the first five years post-menopause, women lose an average of 30% of collagen density, among other changes. Why the dramatic acceleration of signs of aging?

It’s all about estrogen.

We think of estrogen in terms of its role in reproduction, but it’s also a critical component in skin health. Estrogen plays a significant role in supporting healthy cell function, maintaining hydration and collagen production, regulating sebum, providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection, and improving vascularity.

Estrogen declines gradually as women age, but after menopause, estradiol levels drop sharply. The steep and rapid decline of this critical signaling hormone means skin undergoes dramatic tone and texture changes.

How does the loss of estrogen affect the skin?

-Dryness due to a decline in sebum and reduced barrier function

-Thinning, crepiness, and laxity related to the loss of collagen and elastin

-Redness due to reduced barrier function, increased skin reactivity, and changes to vasodilation

-Increased sensitivity can result from loss of hydration and natural lipids in the skin, which leave skin more vulnerable to irritation

-Hyperpigmentation can sometimes be more of an issue antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection declines along with estrogen. Additionally, years of UV exposure can mean a buildup of pigment that can surface more easily on thinner skin.

To target these complex issues, we’ve been focusing our research on innovative new therapies that specifically target the key components involved in skin aging to reawaken cellular memory and restore youthful skin function.

We’re excited to announce the ultimate breakthrough in ageless technology is coming. Our biggest product launch yet is just days away!
